About

I present and produce podcasts and videos for life science companies, both as a freelancer and as Head of Audio and Video for First Create The Media. I was formerly YouTube Creator in Residence for GE and co-produced and co-presented the science radio show and podcast, BBC 5Live Science.

I am open to freelance work as a science/nature presenter, and I am particularly passionate about nature-based solutions to the climate and biodiversity crises.

I specialised in evolutionary biology and animal behaviour in fruit flies, achieving a PhD from the University of Oxford in 2019. I looked at every biologist's favourite animal: the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster, to see what it can tell us about evolutionary theory and how relatedness affects behaviour.

FOR BRANDS

Fully integrated or sponsored videos

I enjoy working closely with brands to create tailored videos to be proud of, particularly those raising scientific awareness or using science to make the world a better place. I can help you publicise a cool new finding, new technology or just share a love of science through online video. These can be hosted on your own social media platforms, on my YouTube channel, or even for internal use.

Previous collaborations include promoting the science magazine New Scientist, sharing new research findings into climate change and coral reefs funded by BNP Paribas, and raising public appreciation of science and engineering as GE’s Creator in Residence. To find out more about how we can work together, email brands@sallylepage.co.uk

FOR LIVE EVENTS

Speaking and event hosting

I have five years of experience as a public speaker and compère for audiences ranging from young children, business professionals and the general public. I’ve delivered fun talks and public lectures on sexual selection, evolution and animal behaviour and can also discuss science in the media and my career as a biologist and YouTuber.

I have also hosted and compèred a variety of events, from science communication competitions, awards ceremonies and science festivals. If you’d like me to speak at your event, or are interested in hiring me as a host, email events@sallylepage.co.uk

FOR ACADEMICS

Communicating research with impact

My background is in biology and academia, completing a PhD in animal behaviour and evolution before becoming a full-time science YouTuber. This puts me in a great position to help researchers communicate their findings with the general public. Disseminating your research is not only a noble goal in and of itself, it also increases your impact (incredibly useful for grant applications and REF) plus papers that have more social media attention are more likely to be cited.

I offer a range of services to academics and academic institutions; I can produce videos about your research either for your own use or to feature on my YouTube channel and I can hold a consultation session with you where we can create an costed impact plan for your grant applications.

You can also book me to speak at your institution (webinars available) on online science communication and using video and social media to share your research with impact. To find out more, email academic@sallylepage.co.uk

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

FAQs

Can you speak at my event? We don’t have the budget to pay you but we will cover your expenses.

Sorry, I rely on speaking fees to pay my rent, and so I can only afford to volunteer my time on one or perhaps two unpaid talks a year. Covering expenses means I won’t be spending any of my own money to speak at your event (i.e. the bare minimum), but it still means I have to take time away from working on projects that allow me to earn a living.

But we’re a charity/not-for-profit organisation?

I appreciate many charities and NPOs have to stick to a tight budget. However, unless everyone in the company is working for free (including catering, venue costs, management), it is unfair for speakers to be expected to work for free. As I typically speak at science outreach events, the majority of my clients are charities, so you can see how it is unfeasible for me to spend the majority of my time working for free.

Can you answer some questions for my school assignment?

Sorry, no. I receive too many of these requests to answer all of them and so I have decided it is only fair to answer none of them.

Can I use your video?

If you want to embed the video in the original YouTube player on your site, that’s fine. If you want to show a video to your class directly from YouTube, that’s fine. For any other use, please email me using the address above. Specifically, if you’re a commercial website, social media page, news organisation or TV company, I do not give permission to publish gifs or still frames from my videos without explicit prior permission, and this will almost certainly incur a licensing fee. To make a licensing request, please email press@sallylepage.co.uk

Are you going to work with Rooster Teeth again?

Hopefully. But as I live in the UK, being a guest on the podcast requires a long-haul flight to Texas so won’t happen very often.
